10,000 Steps a Day: Real Science or Marketing Myth?

"10,000 steps a day" might be the most repeated fitness number in the world — printed on fitness trackers, cited in health apps, treated as an unquestioned baseline. Its actual origin is far less scientific than most people assume.
Where the number actually came from
The 10,000-step target traces back to a 1965 Japanese marketing campaign for a pedometer called "Manpo-kei" — literally translating to "10,000-step meter." The number was chosen because it made a catchy product name and a round, easy-to-remember target, not because researchers had identified it as an optimal health threshold. It stuck culturally for decades before serious research caught up to actually test it.
What the real research shows
More recent, better-designed studies have actually tested step counts against health outcomes directly, and the results are more nuanced — and in some ways more encouraging for people who assumed 10,000 was an unreachable bar.
A major 2019 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, following over 16,000 older women, found that mortality risk dropped substantially up to about 7,500 steps per day, after which additional steps showed diminishing additional benefit. Women averaging around 4,400 steps/day had significantly lower mortality than those averaging 2,700 — meaningful gains well below the 10,000 mark.

This doesn't mean 10,000 is a bad target — more movement generally continues to correlate with better outcomes, just with genuinely diminishing returns past a certain point that varies by individual factors like age and baseline fitness.

- If you're currently sedentary, any consistent increase matters more than hitting a specific round number
